Short-term mudflat dynamics drive long-term cyclic salt marsh dynamics

چکیده
Our study aims to enhance process understanding of the long-term (decadal and longer) cyclic marsh dynamics by identifying the mechanisms that translate large-scale physical forcing in the system into vegetation change, in particular (i) the initiation of lateral erosion on an expanding marsh, and (ii) the control of seedling establishment in front of an eroding marsh-cliff. Short-term sediment dynamics (i.e., seasonal and shorter changes in sediment elevation) at the mudflat causes variation in mudflat elevation over time (dzTF). The resulting difference in elevation between the tidal flat and adjacent marsh (DZ) initiates lateral marsh erosion. Marsh erosion rate was found to depend on sediment type and to increase with increasing DZ and hydrodynamic exposure. Laboratory and field experiments revealed that seedling establishment was negatively impacted by an increasing dzTF. As the amplitude of dzTF increases towards the channel, expanding marshes become more prone to lateral erosion the further they extend on a tidal flat, and the chance for seedlings to establish increases with the distance that marsh has eroded back towards the land. This processbased understanding, showing the role of sediment dynamics as explanatory factor for marsh cyclicity, is important for protecting and restoring valuable marsh ecosystems. Overall, our experiments emphasize the need for understanding the connections between neighbouring ecosystems such as mudflat and salt marsh.

Use of lidar to study changes associated with Spartina invasion in San Francisco Bay marshes
Extensive alteration of the tidal salt marshes of San Francisco Bay has created an urgent need to preserve the few remaining areas of relatively pristine tidal marshes. The dynamics of these marshes can be quantified and mapped using the high vertical and horizontal point density of airborne laser scanners (lidar) if their data quality is adequate. We evaluated lidar’s ability to characterize w...
متن کاملTransition in Iran’s Electricity Market Considering the Policies on Elimination of Electricity Subsidies: System Dynamics Application
Because of electricity subsidies, electricity price in Iran is much lower than its real value, and the growth of electricity demand is much more than its rational rate, which in turn implies ever increasing investment in the electricity section by the Government. Therefore, the recent Government policies are based on elimination of electricity subsidies, followed by commissioning complete elect...
متن کاملA numerical model for the coupled long-term evolution of salt marshes and tidal flats
[1] A one-dimensional numerical model for the coupled long-term evolution of salt marshes and tidal flats is presented. The model framework includes tidal currents, wind waves, sediment erosion, and deposition, as well as the effect of vegetation on sediment dynamics. The model is used to explore the evolution of the marsh boundary under different scenarios of sediment supply and sea level rise...
متن کاملSpeculative Oil Demand and Crude Oil Price Dynamics: A TVP-VAR Approach
Significant decline in the slope of short-term oil supply and demand curves, along with the meaningful change in the degree of risk aversion in arbitrageurs encouraged us to test the time-varying effects of speculative demand on crude oil price dynamics over the period 1985-2016. Using a time-varying parameter vector autoregressive (TVP-VAR) model – with structural shocks identified by Killian ...
متن کاملBenthic metabolism and sulfur cycling along an inundation gradient in a tidal Spartina anglica salt marsh
Central aspects of carbon and sulfur biogeochemistry were studied along a transect extending from an unvegetated mudflat into a Spartina anglica salt marsh. Conditions along the transect differed with respect to tidal elevation, sediment characteristics, vegetation coverage, and benthic macrofauna abundance. Dark sediment O2 uptake and CO2 emission at the highly bioturbated mudflat were low and...
